Farm land has only recently been viewed as a viable alternative investment. A growing global population and increasingly severe weather conditions have started to put pressure on the availability of high-quality farm land. In the past decade the price of farm land surged and in the past couple years has tapered a bit. Some long term investors believe that a continually growing population and climate change will make farm land increasingly scarce and therefore more valuable.
It’s somewhat more difficult to participate directly in farm land investments. It’s a world that most investors don’t know at all. Luckily the appreciation of farm land generally has encouraged some new options to appear for investments. There are now funds that specifically invest in farmland and own portfolios of productive farm land.
