Plan Types

Types of Self-Directed Retirement VehiclesWhich Plan Is Right for Me?

It’s common for people to believe that only certain types of retirement plans can be self-directed. And it’s true that when you hear about self-directed plans, the discussion is usually about “self-directed IRAs.”

But here’s the truth…ANY plan can be self-directed. Self-direction is a feature, an add-on, to any retirement plan. A conscious and legally permissible option you have to invest as you see fit.

Not only that, but the government allows retirement plans to invest in almost any asset (with a few notable exceptions).

For most people, choosing a retirement plan is pretty simple because you only qualify for a couple of options. I’ll break them down here and you can click on any plan name for more information.

If you are an individual (meaning you do NOT own/control a company)…

…and you want to avoid taxes now and pay them in retirement, get a Traditional IRA
…and you want to pay your taxes now and avoid them in retirement (and avoid taxes on the growth of your investments), get a Roth IRA

If you DO own/control a company or have ANY self-employed income…

…and you want to avoid taxes now and pay them in retirement, establish and contribute into the pre-tax accounts of your 401(k)
…and you want to pay your taxes now and avoid them in retirement (and avoid taxes on the growth of your investments), establish and contribute into the Roth account of your 401(k)

…and you want to avoid taxes now and pay them in retirement, get a SEP IRA (a small business alternative to the 401(k) multi-participant plan)

…and you want to avoid taxes now and pay them in retirement, get a SIMPLE IRA (another small business alternative to the 401(k) multi-participant plan)

The question is NOT whether you can self-direct your plan (you can), it’s simply a matter of which plan you qualify for.

The good news is that you can enjoy all the benefits of self-direction no matter which plan you choose!

No more short menus of bland options from your broker. No more standardized Wall Street products that are sold to thousands of other investors…where you have no inherent advantage.

You can choose your investments! You can control your destiny!
